Advance Tax Q3 December 15 Shortfall 234C Interest Urgent India, late-pay by 15 December + Section 234C minimisation.
Advance tax Q3 deadline is 15 December 2026 (75% cumulative requirement for FY 2026-27). Shortfall triggers Section 234C 1% per month interest for 3 months on the shortfall amount. For materially large shortfalls (INR 10 lakh+), interest cost is INR 30,000+. Last-minute computation + Challan + Challan Identification Number tracking critical. Here's the urgent playbook.

/ Why 15 December matters
The Section 234C math.
- Q3 cumulative requirement: 75% of estimated full-year tax by 15 December.
- Shortfall: Section 234C 1% per month simple interest for 3 months.
- Example: INR 20 lakh shortfall → INR 60,000 interest cost (3 months × 1%).
- Larger shortfalls (INR 1 crore+): INR 3 lakh+ interest - materially significant.
- Also: Section 234B 1% per month from April 1 to date of regular assessment if full-year less than 90%.
- Combined 234B + 234C: can be 3-5% effective annual interest on shortfall.
/ Last-minute Q3 computation
Fast workflow.
- Estimate FY 2026-27 total income: salary + business + capital gain + other sources + specific adjustments.
- Compute estimated tax: at applicable slab (new regime default) + surcharge + cess + specific-section tax (115BBH VDA 30%, 112A LTCG 12.5%, 111A STCG 20%, 115BAA 22% for companies).
- Reduce TDS / TCS already deducted (Form 26AS + AIS verification).
- Net advance tax liability = estimated tax - TDS/TCS - any Section 90/91 FTC.
- Q3 cumulative requirement = Net advance tax × 75%.
- Q3 payment due = cumulative requirement - advance tax paid in Q1 (15%) + Q2 (45%).
- Pay via Challan ITNS 280 Code 100 (Advance Tax) by 15 December.
- Keep Challan Identification Number (CIN) for Form 26AS reconciliation.
