How to read this.
Section 115BAC(1A) new regime is DEFAULT from AY 2024-25 for individuals. Old regime requires explicit election via Form 10IEA before ITR due date.
New regime wins for taxpayers with limited deductions (no HRA, no large 80C, no home loan). The lower slabs + higher INR 7 lakh rebate-threshold make it attractive.
Old regime wins for taxpayers claiming large deductions (80C full + 80D + HRA + Section 24(b) interest + 80CCD NPS) at incomes above INR 10-12 lakh.
Rough rule: if your total old-regime deductions exceed roughly INR 4-5 lakh, old regime typically wins above INR 10 lakh income. Below INR 10 lakh with small deductions, new regime almost always wins.
