Revised ITR Deadline 31 December 2026: Section 139(5), fix a mistake in an ITR you already filed.

If your FY 2025-26 return has an error, such as missed income, a wrong deduction, an unreported foreign asset or a TDS mismatch, you can revise it under Section 139(5) until 31 December 2026. Revising costs nothing and has no limit on the number of revisions. After the deadline, the only fixes are an updated return with additional tax, or a rectification request for apparent mistakes.

/ When to revise

Typical triggers.

  • AIS or Form 26AS shows income you did not report: interest, dividends, capital gains or rent.
  • You claimed a deduction or exemption you were not entitled to, or missed one you were entitled to.
  • Foreign assets, accounts or income were left out of Schedule FA or Schedule FSI.
  • Foreign tax credit was claimed without filing Form 67 on time.
  • Wrong residential status was selected (resident vs NRI vs RNOR).
  • A Section 143(1) intimation proposes an adjustment you agree with.

/ Revised return vs other routes

Pick the right fix.

  • Revised return, Section 139(5): any error, before 31 December 2026, no fee.
  • Rectification, Section 154: only for mistakes apparent from the record after processing, such as an arithmetic error or a TDS credit not given.
  • Updated return, Section 139(8A): after 31 December, only to add income or pay more tax, with 25% to 70% additional tax.
  • Response to notice: if a scrutiny or reassessment notice is already issued, revising may not be possible; respond to the notice instead.

/ What BQP checks before revising

So you revise once.

  • Full reconciliation of AIS, TIS and Form 26AS against the return.
  • Residential status test for the year, including the deemed-resident rule for Indian citizens with high Indian income.
  • Schedule FA completeness for foreign bank accounts, shares, ESOP/RSU holdings and property.
  • Form 67 timing for any foreign tax credit claim.
